Planting Tips Just In Time For National Indoor Plant Week

In the third week of September, each and every year, millions of folks celebrate the beauty of having live plants in indoor spaces. While house plants are indeed beautiful to look at and enhance any indoor space they’re in, they have far more than that to offer.

House plants also help with purifying the air (eliminating toxins), producing more oxygen, eliminating carbon dioxide, and even reducing noise. They also provide many health benefits, such as reducing the risk of many illnesses, improving your mood, and even promoting faster healing if you’re ill.

Especially in these times of spending countless hours indoors as we practice safe social distancing, starting your own house plant collection is a perfect way to pass the time.

Whether you’re a seasoned houseplant collector, or if you’re looking to get your feet wet, we’re here to help. Here are a few houseplant ideas and tips just in time for National Indoor Plant Week!

1. Plant By Zone

While it’s technically possible to grow any plant in any home under the right conditions, you’ll have an easier (and more enjoyable) time if you opt for plants that are known to be hardy in your zone. Zones are essentially geographical regions of the states that are categorized according to climate conditions. Cacti, for example, will be easier houseplants in Texas compared to, say, Michigan.

2. Visit A Local Plant Nursery For Inspiration

If you’re just starting out with your collection and have no idea where to begin, a great place to start is your local plant nursery. While local plant nurseries usually do offer a variety of plants, they tend to offer a great selection of plants that are hardy in your area.

In addition to finding plants suitable to your region, visiting a local plant nursery will also give you inspiration on how to arrange your plants and decorate your home with lively greens.

3. Set Up Your House Plants Strategically For Health

Want to enjoy better sleep at night? Try growing jasmine or lavender in the bedroom. Want a natural air purifier in your home office? The snake plant (sansevieria) is the perfect pick. Depending on your health wants and needs, you can arrange your house plants strategically to ensure you reap the health benefits they have to offer.

4. Don’t Over-Water (Or Under-Water) Your Plants

Rather than neglect, one of the biggest culprits of killing any house plant is usually over-watering. Plants definitely do need your love and attention, but sometimes too much love is worse than too little. The problem is, plant roots need air just as much as they need soil and water. When you over-water, the natural air pockets get choked out of the soil, causing the plant roots to quite literally drown.

While each plant may have its own water requirements, a general rule of thumb is to wait until the top two inches of soil is dry before watering again.

5. Set Up An Indoor Garden

Love eating or cooking with farm-fresh vegetables and herbs? Well, why not try growing your own indoor garden right in the comfort of your kitchen? Nowadays, there are many indoor garden kits available that help you provide the right lighting and living conditions for your plants indoors.

If you don’t want to spend money on the sometimes-costly kits available, simply plant your indoor garden in a long planter box and use a fluorescent light to provide them with ample lighting if your kitchen doesn’t get enough direct sunlight.
